The church has said it will allow students to use church facilities to attend Sunday school, after the school district announced that it would be temporarily shut down.

The decision came after two weeks of protests and a string of incidents in which students have been pepper sprayed and detained.

The New York Times reports that students at St. James Academy in Brooklyn, a historically black school, were pepper sprayed when students walked through the hallways and were followed by white students.

In other incidents, students at a middle school in Harlem were forced to use the bathroom by white men who reportedly said, “If you don’t leave now, I’m gonna kill you,” and yelled racial slurs.
